Welcome to Mr. Skokowski’s science and writing class for the 2019-20 school year! We have already started working on some wonderful things and have many more yet to come! We have recently started our Hockey Scholar STEM program, which we’ve been able to partner with the Pittsburgh Penguins to bring to our fourth graders for the fourth consecutive year. Our students have the opportunity to work through various interactive STEM challenges that are intertwined with hockey.
There are still many exciting and important things to come this year. This winter, we will be working through our Electric Circuit science kit and will finish them with our house projects. The students will be bringing in items from home to create their own “house,” which they’ll use all of their knowledge of circuits to create working lights for. This spring, our fourth graders will be taking the English Language Arts, Math, and Science PSSAs, and all three classes are working extremely hard to assure that we absolutely rock the test! After the PSSA testing is finished, in April and May, we will be working on iPads to do some introductory computer programming as part of the STEM initiative Project Lead the Way. This fun and educational unit will finish with students having the opportunity to create, program, and play their own video game. Finally, in May, our students will take a field trip to explore Laurel Caverns with their classmates.
This is just a sample of some of the amazing things that we have planned for this school year. I hope that our students and their families are as excited for the rest of the year as I am!
