Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year!
My name is Ashley Szala and I am the fifth grade math teacher at Trinity North. This is my eighth year teaching fifth grade. I am looking forward to getting to know my students and their families! A math newsletter will be sent home at the beginning of each month to keep you updated on what is happening in the classroom!
This year, we will be focusing on whole number and decimal place value up to the thousandths; whole number and decimal operations; fraction operations; orders of operations; geometry skills; volume; converting measurments; and displaying and interpreting data. These will be taught throughout the school year in eight units. Students will have access to my Canvas page where they will frequently complete online tasks during class (or at home) nd have access to practice worksheets and videos to review previously taught math concepts. Graded tests and assignments will be updated weekly to your Skyward account only.
All students are required to have a 2-inch binder, specifically just for math, with at least 5 binder tabs. We will set the math binders up together during the first week of school. Students are expected to bring their math binder, school planner, and math textbook to class each day. Each student will write their homework assignments in their planner at the end of class every day. I believe homework is an important way for students to independently practice skills that were learned in class. Your child can expect approximately 20 minutes of math homework each night on Mondays through Thursdays.
I believe communication between teachers and parents is vital to student success. Therefore, I am using www.classtag.com or the Classtag app, to communicate with families. I will be sending frequent classroom updates, pictures, and reminders through the app. Please contact me if you have not been added to our classroom on Classtag. I can also be reached by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
