Cold vs Flu Symptoms

Cold Symptoms

Cold symptoms usually begin with a sore throat, which usually goes away after a day or two.  Runny nose and congestion follow, along with a cough.  A slight fever is possible.  Nasal secretions may become thicker and darker, which is normal.  Cold symptoms normally last around a week.  During the first three days a person is contagious, so stay home and rest.  If cold symptoms do not become better after a week, you may have a bacterial infection and need to see a doctor for an antibiotic.

Flu Symptoms

Flu symptoms are usually more severe than a cold and come on quickly.  They incluse a sore throat, fever, headache, muscle aches, soreness, congestion, and cough.

Call the doctor if your child has a persistant fever, painful swallowing, persistent cough and congestion.

Prevention

The best way to prevent colds and the flu is handwashing.
